Options configuration

General

In the options dialog box choose General section. In this section general settings of TNM as well as map, monitoring and journal options are available for editing.

General options

  • Run program on Windows startup: allows to run Total Network Monitor along with Windows OS startup;
  • Start program minimized: Total Network Monitor automatically collapses into tray or task bar just at startup;
  • Show splash screen on program startup: displays splash screen on Total Network Monitor startup (the screen is displayed during Total Network Monitor initialization);
  • Load data from last opened file: data from last opened monitoring file are automatically loaded at Total Network Monitor startup;
  • Check all monitors on program startup: allows automatical running all monitors at Total Network Monitor startup;
  • Use tray icon: if selected the icon is displayed in the application tray, also shortcut menu becomes available (at right-clicking the icon). This option is connected to Minimize to tray (collapses application to tray, not into the task bar) and Minimize to tray on close (collapses application to tray at close).

Map options

  • Use middle button on map: allows adding liaisons between the devices in the map by using middle button on the mouse;
  • Map width: sets linear map width in pixels;
  • Map height: sets linear map height in pixels.

Monitoring options

  • Max # of probes at one time: sets maximum number of probes that can be run simultaneously.

Run program as a service

Running this application as a service is currently not an internal feature of the program itself. It is a workaround giving the possibility to run the program without a logged on user. It is implemented with an external service which runs the program under the NetworkService account.
With the two buttons Install and Uninstall you can setup and remove the service which runs the program, named TNMService. By default the service is installed with Auto run parameter, so it will run when the computer is rebooted, but you can also start it manually using "services.msc" snap-in or console command "net start TNMService".

In order for the service-mode to work properly, some options should be set and some precautions should be taken:

  • Disable the options "Run program on Windows startup", "Start program minimized", "Show splash screen on program startup", "Check for updates on program statup" and "Use tray icon".
  • Enable the options "Load data from last opened file" and "Check all monitors on program startup".
  • Create, set up and save the monitoring project with non-interactive actions only like "Send e-mail" and "Send jabber message".
  • Do not run the service manually when the program is running as usual.
  • Do not run the program by launching it's shortcut or executable file itself when it's running as a service.

Logging

Choose section Log in settings window. General settings for log edit as well as log archiving settings are available in this section.

Monitoring log settings

  • Keep in memory up to log records: sets maximum number of log records which are kept in memory and shown in All monitors log;
  • Move log files to archive: allows to move log records to Archive directory, if the size exceeds the value set in the field At reaching size limit. At the same time the file content is moved to log archive file with the name consisting of archive date and time;
  • Log file: allows to choose one of three log file storage methods: No external logging, Own log file for every project and Log to single text file. In the latter case it is necessary to choose general log file;
  • Log states only (Green, Red, Black): here you can filter log records by monitor results-colors-states;
  • Log record format: here you can create your log record format using macroses from %TIME_STAMP% to %RESULT%, or choose Message by default.

Email

In options window choose section Email. In this section you can set email options to be used during performance of action Send E-mail.

Enter email heading into the field Message subject by default. Likewise enter the message into the field Message body. You can also use macroses (macroses description see section New action adding).

Email sending goes through SMTP server

Enter SMTP server network address and optionally set port number (port 25 is deployed by default) into the fields SMTP server and Port.
If SMTP server requires authorization, check Server requires authorization, and enter user name and password into the fields Login and Password respectively.
Note: Authorization types AUTH PLAIN and AUTH LOGIN are supported. TLS/STARTTLS is not supported at the moment, so it's not possible to use SMTP servers which offer only this type of authorization (like GMail - smtp.gmail.com or Hotmail - smtp.live.com). In order to send emails to the inboxes in these email services use either option "SMTP: Detect automatically" in the action properties, or "SMTP: Use from Options" and enter the address of the service's MX server as the SMTP server (gmail-smtp-in.l.google.com or mx1.hotmail.com accordingly) and disable authorization. However, sending may fail (if the server checks the correspondence of the sender's domain and IP address via SPF) or the message may be marked as spam when received first time.

Messengers

Choose section Messengers in the options dialog box. In this section you can specify protocol Jabber settings, which are used during perfomance of action Send Jabber message.

Enter into the field Jid the user identifier and server which he is bound to. For example, juliet@capulet.com means that the message will be sent on behalf of juliet through server capulet.com
Enter the user password into the field Password, into the field Port - the port number of the remote Jabber server (port 5222 is used by default).
You can enter the address of your Jabber server into the field Use the following server address.
